The British scientist best known for his role in the "Climategate" controversy was cleared of hiding or manipulating data by a UK parliamentary committee. Their investigation indicates that there is no evidence that Phil Jones hid or manipulated data to back up his own science.
From the beginning, Climategate was a ruse. Jones' findings are corroborated by numerous reputable sources including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Science Foundation, the Pentagon, the National Intelligence Council, the World Health Organization, and the CIA.
The evidence against Jones was little more than an old e-mail. Nonetheless, deniers used the stolen e-mail to help undermine the UN Climate Summit (COP15) last December. To avoid similar future controversies, the parliamentary committee said climate scientists must publish all their raw data and methods.
Jones is the head of the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia in England. Jones admitted that he considered suicide due to the stress of the controversy.
Stealing e-mails and discrediting Jones' credibility was a coup for deniers. They know all too well that credibility is as important to scientists as a National Rifle Association membership is to American conservatives.
Climate change deniers can take comfort in the fact that their strategy helped derail efforts to find a binding global climate change treaty at COP15 and they also succeeded in pushing a well respected scientist to the brink.
When it comes to manipulating and hiding the truth, climate change deniers have a long proven track record of misrepresentation and subterfuge.
Now that legislation has been passed to ensure climate research is irreproachable, deniers will have to find other means of discrediting climate change science.
