America`s Greenest School Contest 2010

The 2010 America’s Greenest School ContestSM shows that the kids are deeply committed to the sustainability of the world they live in. To vie for the honor of America's greenest school, children across the US submitted entries explaining what they would do if they were in charge of making their school a greener, more eco-friendly place.

Entries took the form of photo collections, music, videos, essays, or photos of a diorama, collage or piece of artwork.

America voted for the winner from a list of the top 10 finalists. The 2010 winner of the America’s Greenest School Contest was Ms. Roberts’ 3rd and 4th grade classes, they beat out almost 550 entries from nearly 1,600 students nationwide. South Shore Charter Public School in Norwell, MA won a hybrid school bus from IC Bus, as well as a green audit and approximately $20,000 to use for green improvements. The students themselves will also share a $3,000 scholarship.

Here is an excerpt from the winning submission: "There are many important reasons to be green. One is that our actions affect people we don’t even know! For example, if you leave trash behind at the beach, then everyone else has to live with your litter, including the wildlife. Second, some resources, like the ozone, are not renewable. Last, being green is like being a good citizen – it means that every person does their own small part to make the world a better can’t happen unless everyone gets involved!"
