Video - What we Can Expect from COP 19/CMP 9

On the first day of the Warsaw Climate Change Conference, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres briefed the media on what will be the main focus of the negotiations over the coming two weeks. She mentions the science of AR5 and extreme weather events including Typhoon Haiyam.

"That points us to the need for urgent action and reminds us that we must get to global peaking of emissions this decades and to zero net emissions by the second half of this century," Figueres said.

In Warsaw there are three main issues that will be addressed:

1. Clarification of climate finance
2. Launching of the construction of loss and damage mechanism
3. Progressive clarification of elements in the draft agreement that will be tabled in Lima at COP 20

Warsaw is a critical step in preparation for COP 20 in Lima, culminating in the new climate agreement that is scheduled to be finalized at COP 21 in Paris in 2015.

Cop 19 will also showcase climate action that is already being taken. However Figueres concludes by saying:

"All of which is good news, all of which is insufficient because it is clear that we need to go faster higher and stronger if we are to stay within 2 degree limit."
